The stencil is placed on the fabric and a paste made from glutinous rice and rice bran is brushed on. The parts left white by the paste are the same as in katazome, but tsutsugaki’s major feature is the freedom of expression possible with hand-drawing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor either technique, the subsequent process is the same.\u003cbr\u003eOnce the paste dries, dye is applied with brushes. For single colors it’s done in one pass, but for multicolor pieces they layer each color one by one as if painting a picture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFinally, when the paste is washed away with water the pattern emerges clearly, and once dried the piece is complete.
